Tinting

Analyze the color
- How to Identify the color deviation;
- Mix a color
- Do a spray-out
- Check the spray-out thoroughly and compare it to the target color of the vehicle
- Possible improvements:
- Purity: This is related to the chroma. The target color differs from the spray-out’s color in terms of purity of the color.
- Lightness or darkness of face, flop and/or side tone: Related to the value of the color. The target color is lighter or darker than the spray-out’s color. This is visible from face, flop and/or side tone.
- Color: This is related to the color’s hue. The target color’s hue differs from the spray-out’s color.
The Munsell Color System
To understand how to make color improvements, it is helpful to know the Munsell Color System:
The Munsell color system is a color space that specifies colors based on three properties of color: hue (basic color), chroma (color intensity), and value (lightness).
- The hue is divided into 10 different areas (hues) of the horizontal circle.
- Value, or lightness, varies vertically along the color solid, from black (value 0) at the bottom, to white (value 10) at the top.
- Chroma, measured radially from the center of each slice, represents the “purity” of a color (related to saturation), with lower chroma being less pure (more washed out, as in pastels).
Tint a color
To choose the correct tinter, you need to consider some decision rules. The rules regarding the colors’ hue, value and chroma are covered within the tinting chart. Additional information for the chroma is illustrated within the chromatic circle.
If you need detailed information about the tinters’ characteristics, you can find it in the basecoat 35 overview. There is also a graphic which explains how to read the pictograms. (including face view, side view, color group, …)
Example #1: You mixed a red color but need it a bit more violet.
- Step: Check the tinting chart. This tells you that you could add a bit of M1420 for correction. Please consider: It is recommended to use tinters which are already in the formula only.
- Step: Define the needed amount. Check the existing amount in the formula and add some paint considering the spray-out’s color appearance.
- Step: Mix the color
- Step: Do another spray-out and check if the color fits to the vehicle
Example #2: You mixed a red color but need it a bit darker in the face view.
- Step: Check the tinting chart. This tells you that you could add a bit of M1350, M1370 or M1390 for correction. Please consider: It is recommended to use a tinter which is already in the formula only.
- Step: Define the needed amount. Check the existing amount in the formula and add some paint considering the spray-out’s color appearance.
- Step: Mix the color
- Step: Do another spray-out and check if the color fits to the vehicle
Example #3: You mixed a red metallic color but need it a bit lighter (coarseness) in the face view.
- Step: Check the tinting chart. This tells you that you should use aluminiums only.
- Step: Define the needed amount. Check the existing amount in the formula and add some paint considering the spray-out’s color appearance.
- Step: Mix the color
- Step: Do another spray-out and check if the color fits to the vehicle
Tinters' characteristics
This overview can give you detailed information on the different tinters' characteristics.
You will find more information on how to read the pictograms in the pictograms image below.
Pictograms
This is an instruction on how to read the pictorgrams. The pictograms provide detailed information on the tinters' characteristics.
The pictograms contain the following information:
- in the center field you see the color group
- in the left field you see the face view color appearance
- in the right field you see the side view color appearance
- right above the center field there is the color bias which means the color's undertone which leans toward one of secondary or tertiary colors
- the frame gives an indication of the color purity/saturation
- For the metallics there is a small point on the top right of the frame. The type of point shows if the size of particles is fine, medium or coarse
